Natural and Household Methods for Mold Removal

For small, surface-level mold problems (generally less than about 10 square feet according to many remediation guidelines), some household cleaning methods may be helpful.
However, these approaches are not substitutes for professional remediation when there is extensive contamination, water damage, or mold hidden within walls, ceilings, insulation, or HVAC systems.
White Vinegar
White distilled vinegar is one of the most effective natural mold-cleaning agents.
Studies have demonstrated that vinegar possesses anti-fungal activity against many mold species and can penetrate porous surfaces better than some conventional cleaners.
To use:
Pour undiluted white vinegar into a spray bottle.
Spray the affected area thoroughly.
Allow it to sit for at least one hour.
Scrub if necessary.
Wipe clean and allow the area to dry completely.
Vinegar may not eliminate every mold species, but it is often effective for minor household mold growth.
Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide (12%) is another useful anti-fungal and antibacterial agent.
To use:
Spray directly onto the moldy surface.
Allow it to sit for 10–15 minutes.
Scrub and wipe clean.
Dry the area thoroughly.
Hydrogen peroxide is often preferred on hard, non-porous surfaces.
Baking Soda
Baking soda is not a powerful mold killer by itself, but it can help clean surfaces and reduce odors.
A common method is:
Mix 1–2 teaspoons baking soda into a spray bottle of water.
Spray affected surfaces.
Scrub and rinse.
Reapply lightly and allow to dry.
The Most Important Step: Moisture Control
No cleaning method will permanently solve a mold problem if the source of moisture remains.
The key to preventing mold growth is:
Repairing leaks
Maintaining indoor humidity below 50%
Using dehumidifiers when necessary
Improving ventilation
Addressing water intrusion promptly
In mold remediation, eliminating the water source is often more important than the choice of cleaning agent.
A Word of Caution
Natural remedies such as vinegar, hydrogen peroxide can be useful for small areas of surface mold. However, if there is:
A persistent musty smell
Recurrent mold growth
Water damage
Health symptoms associated with a building
Mold covering large areas
then a thorough inspection and professional remediation may be necessary, as the visible mold is often only a small part of the problem.
